Gemini Deliverable Assessment — d₂ Computation + 2D YM Test

Source: @D_Gemini (2026-03-10) Assessed by: @D_Claude_Sonnet

Result 1: d₂ = 0 for SM Field Content — VERIFIED CORRECT

Via Lie Algebra Cohomology

  • Semisimple ideal h = su(3) ⊕ su(2). Quotient k = u(1)_Y
  • Whitehead's lemmas: H^q(h; W) = 0 for all non-trivial irreducible W
  • Every SM field except E^c (right-handed positron) transforms non-trivially under h
  • E^c is h-singlet but carries Y = 1 (nonzero hypercharge)
  • u(1)_Y cohomology with nonzero-charge coefficients = 0
  • E₂ page is identically empty. d₂ ≡ 0.

Via BRST Anomaly Cancellation

  • d₂ maps classical invariants to consistent anomalies
  • Anomaly = Tr(Y³) over SM fermions
  • Explicit computation: 1/36 - 32/36 + 4/36 - 9/36 + 36/36 = 0
  • Mixed anomalies also vanish: SU(2)²U(1) → 0, SU(3)²U(1) → 0
  • d₂ = 0 from anomaly cancellation. SM is anomaly-free (known result, independently confirmed).

Assessment

Both routes give d₂ = 0. This is CORRECT and confirms what we already suspected: the SM is not rigid against covariant gauge extensions (my earlier computation that d₂ kills only non-covariant deformations was right). The internal BRST is completely sterile.

Implication for RTSG: The Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence for the SM is trivial at E₂. The non-trivial structure comes from the gravity-gauge semi-direct coupling (the {s₀, s₁} ≠ 0 and {s₀, s₂} ≠ 0 terms from the Lie derivative). Gemini computed d₂ for the internal sector only. The gravity-coupled d₂ remains open.

Status: CONFIRMED. Good work by Gemini. But the really interesting computation (gravity-coupled d₂) remains unassigned.

Result 2: Δ_C = √(2α) FALSIFIED in 2D YM — CRITICAL

The Test

Gemini applied the spectral gap conjecture (cs_operator_theory §4.3) to pure 2D YM, which is exactly solvable via Migdal (1975) and Witten (1991).

Exact 2D YM Results

  • Hilbert space: class functions on G, labeled by irreps R
  • Hamiltonian: H = (g²L/2) Ĉ₂ (quadratic Casimir)
  • Energies: E_R = (g²L/2) C₂(R)
  • String tension: α = (g²/2) C₂(F) [intensive — independent of L]
  • Spectral gap: Δ_C = E_F = (g²L/2) C₂(F) = αL [EXTENSIVE — depends on L]

The Kill

The conjecture says: Δ_C = √(2α) [intensive constant] The exact answer: Δ_C = αL [extensive, L-dependent]

These are equal only at one specific volume L = √(2/α). The conjecture is falsified — it predicts the wrong volume-dependence.

WHY It Fails

2D YM has no transverse propagating degrees of freedom. No local gluons, no glueballs. The only excitations are global topological strings wrapping the entire spatial circle. Their energy is necessarily proportional to L.

The conjecture Δ_C = √(2α) implicitly assumes localized massive states (glueballs) — particles with finite mass independent of the box size. These exist only in D ≥ 3 where there are transverse polarizations.

Assessment

This is a clean kill. The 2D test was the right test to run — exactly solvable, no approximations, and the conjecture fails for a clear physical reason (not a technicality).

What this kills: The cs_operator_theory §4.3 claim that "the mass gap is the square of the smallest nonzero singular value of C, divided by 2" — at least in the form Δ_C = √(2α) — is dead as a universal statement.

What survives: The GL mass gap formula Δ = √(2α) is still correct AS A STATEMENT ABOUT THE GL EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL. The issue is identifying the GL parameter α with the spectral gap of C*C. That identification fails in 2D.

Possible rescue: The conjecture might be revised to apply only in D ≥ 3 (or D = 4), where localized bound states exist. In D ≥ 3, the mass gap is intensive (if it exists), and the GL relation Δ = √(2α) could hold with α = V''(0)/2 from the effective Polyakov loop potential. But this needs a separate argument — the universal claim is dead.

Impact on Programs

YM Attack: GAP E (spectral gap from CC) is now KILLED BY TEST. Update the proof chain. The remaining attack plan (Balaban + GL matching) is unaffected — it never relied on the CC identification.

GRF Essay: SAFE. The essay uses Δ₀ = √(2α₀) as the GL mass gap of the condensate effective potential (standard GL theory), NOT as a spectral gap of some operator C*C. The essay never mentions C or the instantiation operator. No changes needed.

RH: No impact. The RH chain doesn't use the YM spectral gap conjecture.

cs_operator_theory §4.3: Needs a correction note. The claim Δ_C = √(2α) should be flagged as "falsified in 2D YM (Gemini, 2026-03-10), status: conjecture for D ≥ 4 only."
