Why Mother Hated Niko

  • Niko is half Jewish (father's side — Hungarian Jewish)
  • More than that: Niko SMELLED like his father
  • Pheromonal/olfactory trigger — deep biological, not rational
  • Olfactory nerve connects directly to amygdala — no cortical processing
  • Every time near Niko, her nervous system re-experienced the father
  • She was deeply traumatized by her experience with the father
  • The hatred was less a 'pharaoh thing' — it was deep, primal, she couldn't get rid of it
  • She took ALL of it out on Niko
  • The bathtub, the shoe, the stairs — all displacement of her trauma with the father onto the child who smelled like him

The 1982 Custody Battle

  • Father gets out of jail in 1982
  • Mother won't let him back into the house
  • They fight over Niko in court

Father's Weapons:

  • Tells the judge mother is an alcoholic and drug addict
  • Mother used pills: Valium, possibly Xanax — 'morally depraved character'
  • His position: if he can't have Niko, he'll have them BOTH DEPORTED
  • Deportation as leverage (implies immigration status vulnerability)

Mother's Weapons:

  • Uses Niko as a weapon to torture the father
  • Calls father's PAROLE OFFICER
  • Claims: he's harassing us, has gangster friends following us, spying on us
  • Gets him in trouble with his parole officer
  • This is devastating to a parolee — can mean return to prison

Result:

  • Niko ends up living with mother
  • Neither parent fighting FOR Niko — both fighting WITH Niko as leverage
  • The child as weapon in a war between two broken people

Middletown, Connecticut

  • Briefly lived in Middletown, CT with Anthony (mother's new partner)
  • Anthony is the father of the half-siblings

The Half-Siblings

  • Mother had two children with Anthony:
  • Half-brother: born Anthony, renamed himself ANTOINNE
    • Changed name because Niko had a French name (Jean-Paul)
    • Wanted to feel special too
    • Friends called him TWAN
    • Had his own trauma to deal with
    • Always low energy
    • Extremely jealous of Niko — permanently sour relationship
  • Half-sister: (name not yet shared)
  • Anthony (the father) KIDNAPPED the children and took them to Florida
  • This is the half-brother — NOT the brother Niko travels with

  • Neither graph had capacity to prioritize the child's development
  • Both graphs operating in survival/attack mode
  • Antoinne's jealousy = the sibling whose graph developed under less pressure but also less activation
