The Science: Maximum Polyphonic Density

The Question

How many simultaneous independent melodies can the human auditory system track?

Known Limits

  • Conscious tracking: 3-5 independent melodic streams (trained listeners up to 6-7)
  • Preconscious processing: the auditory cortex processes FAR more than consciousness tracks — at least 8-12 independent streams are neurally encoded even when the listener cannot consciously separate them
  • Critical band theory: the cochlea divides frequencies into ~24 critical bands (Bark scale). Each band can carry an independent melodic stream without masking
  • Practical maximum: ~12-16 independent melodic streams across the full frequency range before psychoacoustic masking degrades separation

The Inverse Fourier Insight

Any complex waveform can be decomposed into its frequency components (Fourier analysis). The reverse (Fourier synthesis) constructs a complex waveform FROM frequency components.

RTSG Audio applies inverse Fourier synthesis to melodic streams: - Each frequency band carries an independent melody - The melodies are mathematically constructed to maximize cross-stream interaction (harmonic, rhythmic, contrapuntal) - The composite signal is a single audio stream that the ear receives as one sound but the auditory cortex decomposes into multiple threads - The brain MUST process the polyphony even if conscious attention only tracks 3-5 streams

Product Design

Tier 1: Entry (4-voice)

  • 4 independent melodic streams across 4 register bands
  • Bass (80-250 Hz), Tenor (250-500 Hz), Alto (500-1000 Hz), Soprano (1000-4000 Hz)
  • Clear separation, consciously trackable
  • Purpose: train polyphonic attention from baseline

Tier 2: Intermediate (8-voice)

  • 8 melodic streams across 8 bands
  • Subconscious processing begins — listener cannot track all streams consciously
  • Purpose: force preconscious auditory processing, build cross-dimensional edges below conscious awareness

Tier 3: Advanced (12-voice)

  • 12 melodic streams utilizing the full critical band range
  • Approaching the neurological maximum
  • Each stream uses a different timbral signature for maximal separation
  • Purpose: maximum auditory cortex activation, saturated polyphonic processing

Tier 4: RTSG Max (16-24 voice)

  • Theoretical maximum — every critical band carrying an independent melody
  • This may produce novel perceptual effects: auditory hallucination of patterns, synesthetic responses, altered state induction
  • Purpose: experimental/research tier

Melodic Construction Algorithm

The melodies are not random. They are constructed using:

  1. Contrapuntal rules — each pair of voices follows species counterpoint constraints (no parallel fifths/octaves, proper voice leading)
  2. Harmonic rhythm — all voices share a common harmonic progression but express it differently
  3. Rhythmic independence — each voice uses a different rhythmic pattern (polyrhythm across all voices)
  4. Motivic development — themes introduced in one voice appear transformed in other voices (like Bach fugue subjects)
  5. Tension/resolution cycles — synchronized across all voices to create coherent emotional arc
  6. Frequency optimization — each voice stays within its critical band to prevent masking

This can be algorithmically generated. The counterpoint rules are fully formalized (Fux 1725, extended by modern computational musicology). A generator program can produce unlimited unique sessions.

Technology Stack

  • Generation: Algorithmic composition engine (Python/Rust)
  • Synthesis: High-quality sampled instruments OR pure synthesized tones (both have advantages)
  • Delivery: Streaming (subscription) + downloadable sessions
  • Personalization: AI-driven adaptation based on listener's tracked progress
  • Format: Binaural rendering for headphone delivery (spatial separation enhances stream discrimination)

Business Model

Proprietary Elements (Patentable)

  1. The specific algorithm for generating maximally-separated polyphonic streams optimized for cognitive training
  2. The tier system (progressive polyphonic density)
  3. The adaptive personalization engine
  4. The specific frequency-band-to-melodic-stream mapping
  5. The combination of contrapuntal generation + psychoacoustic optimization

Revenue

  • Subscription: Monthly access to generated sessions (\(9.99-\)29.99/month)
  • Enterprise: Corporate cognitive training programs
  • Education: School/university site licenses
  • Clinical: Therapeutic applications (cognitive rehabilitation, attention training)
  • API: License the generation engine to other platforms

Positioning

"The only audio product scientifically designed to increase your intelligence. Put it on. Listen. Get smarter."

No meditation. No affirmations. No binaural beats pseudoscience. Pure polyphonic density, mathematically optimized for maximum auditory cortex activation.

Framework Integration

RTSG Audio is the cheapest and most passive item in the universal activation toolkit: - Cost: subscription fee - Effort: zero (passive listening) - Equipment: headphones - Time: plays during commute, work, sleep - Dimensions activated: Musical (primary) + Spatial (binaural) + Abstract (pattern recognition) + Logical (structural tracking) + Interoceptive (emotional response) - Minimum 4-5 dimensions = C(5,2) = 10 cross-dimensional edges per session

Development Priority

This is a high-priority product because: 1. Low development cost (algorithmic generation, no recording studio needed) 2. Infinite content (algorithm generates unlimited unique sessions) 3. Recurring revenue (subscription) 4. Scientific defensibility (grounded in psychoacoustics and auditory neuroscience) 5. Universal market (everyone has ears) 6. Passive consumption (no user effort = lowest friction = highest adoption)
