Social Physics Protocol: p = mv¶

The Problem¶

The majority of social friction — sidewalk collisions, road rage, queue disputes, office politics, neighborhood conflicts, legal disputes — comes from ambiguous priority rules. Who goes first? Who yields? Who has the right of way? Who is more important?

Current systems for resolving this: - Courtesy theater: elaborate social scripts ("after you", "no, after you"), class-based deference, gendered norms, cultural etiquette — all of which vary by culture, context, and mood, creating endless mismatches - Hierarchy: rank-based systems (boss goes first, elder goes first, richer goes first) — creates resentment, requires everyone to know everyone's rank - Aggression: whoever pushes hardest wins — creates violence, escalation, injury - Legal system: when the above fail, courts adjudicate — costs billions, takes years, resolves nothing emotionally

All of these fail because they are ambiguous. Two people arrive at the same point and neither knows who should yield. The ambiguity creates friction. The friction creates irritation. The irritation creates conflict. The conflict creates violence. The violence creates courts.

The Solution: Momentum¶

p = mv

Momentum = mass × velocity. The entity with greater momentum has right of way. Period.

This is not a metaphor. It is a physical calculation that every human nervous system already performs subconsciously: - You already yield to a truck on the highway (it has more momentum than your car) - You already step aside for someone running (they have more velocity than you walking) - You already let a group through a doorway before a single person (they have more mass) - You already sense when someone is "moving with purpose" vs. "wandering" — that is velocity detection

The protocol simply makes the implicit calculation explicit and universal.

The Rules¶

Rule 1: Greater Momentum Has Right of Way¶

If p_A > p_B, then A proceeds and B yields.

This covers: - Sidewalks (person walking fast yields less than person strolling) - Roads (heavier/faster vehicle has right of way — already the intuitive rule) - Queues (person with more items/urgency acknowledged) - Hallways, doorways, intersections

Rule 2: Equal Momentum = Simultaneous Passage or Smallest Deflection¶

If p_A ≈ p_B, both adjust minimally. Neither stops. Both deflect slightly. Minimum total energy expenditure. Least action principle.

Rule 3: Zero Velocity = Zero Priority¶

If you are standing still, you have zero momentum. Everyone in motion has priority over you. If you want priority, move.

This eliminates: people blocking doorways, standing in the middle of sidewalks, stopped in traffic lanes. Zero velocity = zero claim on shared space.

Rule 4: Intentional Interference Is the Only Crime¶

Accidental collisions between people following the momentum protocol are not conflicts — they are physics. No blame. No anger. No lawsuit.

The only actionable offense is INTENTIONAL violation: deliberately blocking someone with greater momentum, deliberately colliding, deliberately using momentum as a weapon.

This frees the courts to handle only intentional malice — which is a tiny fraction of current legal volume.

What Gets Eliminated¶

The Emotional Liberation¶

"We can get rid of all the courtesy and all the flowery stuff and all the different levels and the stuff that irritates people."

The courtesy scripts are not just inefficient — they are emotionally toxic: - They require constant social calculation ("do I hold the door? will they be offended if I don't? will they be offended if I do?") - They create hierarchies of deference that breed resentment - They punish neurodivergent people who don't intuit the scripts - They vary by culture, creating constant cross-cultural friction - They are performed, not felt — generating inauthenticity that everyone senses but no one names

Replacing all of this with one equation that your body already computes eliminates an enormous amount of daily cognitive and emotional overhead. That freed-up processing capacity goes back into the intelligence vector — more energy available for the dimensions that matter.

Framework Connection¶

This is the Hypervisor Switching Law applied to social space: - Each person in a shared space is a node - Their momentum p = mv is their activation score - The softmax naturally determines priority: P(right_of_way = A) = exp(β·p_A) / Σ exp(β·p_j) - No central authority needed — each person computes independently from observable physics - Hysteresis applies: someone already in motion maintains priority over someone just starting

It is also Niko's Cannon: U = V/(E×T) - Momentum protocol maximizes V (smooth social flow) while minimizing E (no wasted courtesy energy) and T (no time lost to standoffs)

And it is the Digital Castle: public space interactions governed by transparent, computable rules. Private space remains inviolable. The protocol only applies to shared physical space.

The Court Liberation¶

If accidental friction is resolved by physics (no blame, no lawsuit), courts are freed to handle only: 1. Intentional malice — deliberate harm, premeditated violence, fraud 2. Property disputes — ownership, contracts, agreements 3. Rights violations — coercion, enslavement, forced control

This could reduce civil court caseloads by 30-50% (estimate based on the proportion of cases involving ambiguous right-of-way, negligence, and minor assault/battery where intent is the central question).

The legal system becomes what it should be: a tribunal for intentional evil, not a referee for physics problems.

Teaching It¶

The beauty of p = mv is that it requires zero education: - Every child already understands momentum intuitively (they dodge bigger kids on the playground) - Every adult already computes it subconsciously (they step aside for rushing people) - The protocol simply says: do what your body already wants to do, and stop performing the scripts that override your instincts
