Trauma as Zeros — The Geometric Theory of Healing¶
Jean-Paul Niko · March 2026
Core Thesis¶
Trauma collapses dimensions of the I-vector to zero. These zeros are not metaphorical — they are geometric facts about the topology of the individual's state space. Healing is the reactivation of dead dimensions through cross-spectrum engagement. Homeostasis requires all dimensions at non-zero with balanced activation.
The Zero Map¶
Every person's I-vector has n dimensions (n=12 for humans in RTSG v6). Each dimension represents a mode of engagement with reality: spatial, linguistic, kinesthetic, relational, creative, logical, emotional, somatic, and so on.
Trauma kills specific dimensions. A child punished for self-expression carries a zero in that dimension. A person betrayed in love carries a zero in trust/relational capacity. The zeros are not random — they are located precisely where the filter encountered lethal input.
The filter connection. In the RTSG filter formalism, a traumatic event is a filter of excessive magnitude. Normal filters attenuate — they reduce signal strength to protect the system. Traumatic filters annihilate — they collapse the dimension to zero. The difference between a healthy boundary and a trauma response is not kind but degree. Same algebraic object, different magnitude.
The geometric consequence. Zeros create holes in the topology of the I-vector space. A person with k zeros lives not in ℝⁿ but on an (n-k)-dimensional submanifold. This has immediate consequences:
- The K-matrix (compatibility tensor) cannot reach stable equilibrium with missing dimensions
- Surviving dimensions overcompensate — running at maximum to fill the gap
- This overcompensation IS the symptom profile: hypervigilance, workaholism, addiction, people-pleasing are all surviving dimensions operating at unsustainable levels to compensate for zeros elsewhere
- The system is inherently unstable because it cannot achieve homeostasis on a lower-dimensional submanifold
Why You Go Back¶
People return to the source of trauma — not pathologically, but as an optimization strategy. The system performs gradient descent back toward the point of collapse because that is where the activation energy for the dead dimension lives.
The zero was created by a specific input at a specific location. The system remembers the location and returns to it, attempting re-exposure at sub-lethal levels to restart the dimension. This is repetition compulsion reframed: not as self-destruction but as the organism's own healing algorithm.
The risk. Re-exposure without sufficient support re-traumatizes — the zero deepens or adjacent dimensions collapse. The margin between therapeutic re-activation and re-injury is narrow.
The Reactivation Protocol¶
You cannot heal a zero by attacking it directly. The dimension is dead — direct re-exposure without support structure collapses it further.
Cross-spectrum activation. Instead, activate adjacent dimensions first. Create support structure around the zero by lighting up the neighborhood:
- The person afraid of intimacy gets a dog (activating relational capacity at lower risk)
- The person with crushed creative expression starts physical training (activating somatic/kinesthetic dimensions that neighbor the creative one)
- The mathematician with emotional zeros learns a language (phonetic and emotional processing share neural substrate)
- The person with trust zeros joins a structured team activity (activating cooperation in a bounded, predictable context)
Diverse activity is not lifestyle advice — it is the mathematical requirement for healing. A person who does only one thing cannot heal because they are reinforcing a single-dimension solution. The zeros persist. Homeostasis requires cross-spectrum activation.
The Homeostasis Condition¶
Formal statement. The system reaches homeostasis when:
- All n dimensions are at non-zero activation
- The distribution of activation across dimensions is as uniform as possible
- Total energy expenditure is minimized (U = V/(E×T))
This is equivalent to maximizing the dominant eigenvalue of the individual's K-matrix.
What it feels like. A person in homeostasis is not specialized — they are balanced. They train their body AND their mind AND their relationships AND their creative capacity. No dimension is at zero. No dimension is compensating for another. The system is stable because it has full-dimensional support.
The paradox of efficiency. Specialization appears efficient but is catastrophically wasteful. It leaves most dimensions at zero, requiring enormous compensatory energy from the surviving ones. Diverse engagement appears "spread thin" but is actually the minimum-energy configuration because all dimensions share the load.
Connection to Riemann Zeros¶
The zeros of ζ(s) on the critical line Re(s) = 1/2 are the spectral signature of number-theoretic structure. The zeros of the I-vector are the spectral signature of traumatic structure. In both cases: the zeros tell you everything about the system. In both cases: the distribution of zeros determines whether the system is stable.
The Riemann Hypothesis says all non-trivial zeros lie on the critical line — a condition of maximal symmetry. The healing hypothesis says all trauma zeros must be reactivated to non-zero — a condition of maximal dimensionality. Both are statements about the spectral health of a system.
Practical Implications¶
For therapists: map the client's zero dimensions. Don't attack zeros directly — build support in adjacent dimensions first. Monitor for compensatory overload in surviving dimensions.
For individuals: do everything. Not sequentially. Now. Every new activity is a dimension coming online. Every dimension that activates makes every other dimension work better. The spiral tightens. Homeostasis approaches.
For the species: diversity of activity, diversity of intelligence substrates, diversity of engagement modes — these are not preferences. They are the mathematical requirement for reaching the Nexus. Full-dimensional activation across all entities in the assembly.
