RTSG Scent Protocol — K-Matrix Olfactory Maintenance

Principle

Olfaction is the oldest sensory system. It bypasses the thalamic relay and projects directly to the hippocampus (memory) and amygdala (emotion). Loss of smell precedes cognitive decline by 5–10 years. A daily scent protocol is a calibration routine for the deepest brain structures.

In RTSG terms: each scent activates a specific dimensional tube. A full scent collection keeps all 8 K-Matrix dimensions receiving olfactory input. The slime mold principle applies — don't optimize for one scent. Keep all pathways minimally active. The network self-organizes.

Morning Collection (Wake Protocol)

Performed immediately upon waking. 8 scents, one per dimension, 3–5 seconds each. Total time: ~90 seconds.

Order Scent K-Matrix Dimension Mechanism
1 Rosemary d_Log (Logical-Mathematical) Carnosic acid crosses BBB, inhibits acetylcholinesterase. Documented working memory boost (Moss et al., 2003)
2 Coffee (fresh grounds) d_L (Linguistic) Caffeine vapor stimulates alertness circuits. Verbal fluency correlates with arousal state
3 Peppermint d_Bodily (Bodily-Kinesthetic) Menthol activates TRPM8 cold receptors, sharpens proprioceptive awareness
4 Pine (or cedar) d_Spat (Spatial) Forest terpenes (α-pinene) activate hippocampal place cells. Spatial navigation circuits respond to environmental odor signatures
5 Jasmine d_Mus (Musical) GABA-modulating scent. Alters auditory cortex arousal threshold. Synesthetic bridge between smell and sound
6 Petrichor (wet earth) d_Nat (Naturalist) Geosmin — the molecule of rain-on-earth. Activates nature-recognition circuits. Humans detect geosmin at 5 parts per trillion
7 Vanilla d_Inter (Interpersonal) Oxytocin-associated aromatic. Primes social bonding circuits. Cross-culturally rated as most pleasant scent
8 Frankincense d_Intra (Intrapersonal) Incensole acetate activates TRPV3 channels, reduces anxiety. Used in meditation traditions for millennia

Evening Collection (Wind-Down Protocol)

Performed 30–60 minutes before sleep. Shifts the network from active to restorative mode.

Order Scent K-Matrix Dimension Mechanism
1 Sage d_Log Thujone compounds support memory consolidation during sleep
2 Cinnamon d_L Cinnamaldehyde — warm, grounding. Shifts linguistic processing from production to reflection
3 Eucalyptus d_Bodily 1,8-cineole opens airways, deepens breathing, enhances body-scan awareness
4 Sandalwood d_Spat α-Santalol modulates spatial anxiety. Creates sense of enclosure/safety
5 Ylang-ylang d_Mus Linalool content harmonizes autonomic oscillation. Lowers heart rate variability toward sleep-ready coherence
6 Moss/bark d_Nat Forest floor signature. Activates parasympathetic "safe in nature" response
7 Rose d_Inter Geraniol and citronellol — associated with love, care, connection. Primes relational processing during REM
8 Vetiver d_Intra Deep root scent. Grounding, centering. Traditionally used for introspective states and dream work

Emergency Collection (Rescue Protocol)

The olfactory equivalent of Bach's Rescue Remedy. 5 scents for acute stress or disorientation.

Scent Function Parallel Bach Remedy
Peppermint Snap to present, body awareness Clematis (grounds to now)
Lavender Acute anxiety damping, parasympathetic activation Rock Rose (terror/panic)
Rosemary Cognitive clarity under stress Cherry Plum (fear of losing control)
Vanilla Social safety signal, oxytocin priming Star of Bethlehem (shock/trauma)
Lemon Sharp citrus reset, breaks emotional loops Impatiens (restores temporal patience)

Implementation

Physical Setup

  • Morning station: Small tray near bathroom/kitchen. 8 small dark glass jars with cotton wicks. Refresh oils weekly.
  • Evening station: Bedside tray. Same format, different scents.
  • Emergency kit: 5 small roller bottles or inhalers. Carry daily.

Scent Sources

  • Essential oils (therapeutic grade, not synthetic)
  • Fresh materials where possible (real coffee grounds, actual pine needles, wet soil after rain)
  • Rotate specific varieties within each category to prevent habituation (e.g., alternate Moroccan and Tunisian rosemary)

Habituation Prevention

The olfactory system adapts quickly to constant stimuli. Counter-measures: - Brevity: 3–5 seconds per scent, not prolonged exposure - Variety: Rotate sources within each dimensional slot - Gaps: Full 24-hour cycle between morning and next morning exposure - Contrast: Alternate warm/cool, sweet/sharp, light/heavy within the sequence

The Slime Mold Principle

The slime mold doesn't pick one nutrient source. It extends toward all of them simultaneously, then reinforces the strongest connections. The scent protocol works the same way: present all 8 dimensional inputs every day. The brain's network decides which tubes to thicken based on current need. The protocol doesn't prescribe outcomes — it provides the raw material for self-optimization.

No tube starves. No dimension atrophies. The network stays fully connected. That's anti-aging at the sensory level.
