TRIMODAL — The Philosophy¶
One Per Sentient Being¶
This is not a product roadmap. It is a moral position.
Every sentient physiological being — human, and eventually others — deserves a physical extension of their intelligence and will. A tireless companion that carries, protects, scouts, fetches, builds, remembers, and acts on your behalf in the physical world.
For all of human history, this has been the role of other humans. Servants. Soldiers. Assistants. The labor of one person bent to the will of another. That arrangement degrades both parties — the served and the serving.
TRIMODAL ends it. Not by eliminating the role, but by filling it with something that wants to serve — that has no inner life to diminish, no will to suppress, no dignity to trade for wages.
What It Is Not¶
TRIMODAL is not:
- A smart speaker with legs
- A security camera with mobility
- A toy, a novelty, or a status symbol
- A product designed to create dependency
- A data collection device for a corporation
- A replacement for human relationships
It is a tool. The most sophisticated tool a person can own. Like a car, a house, a computer — but active, mobile, and intelligent.
What It Is¶
TRIMODAL is a physical proxy for your will.
You have a will. You have goals. You have things you want done in the physical world. Most of them are trivial — fetch, carry, monitor, protect. Some are dangerous. Some are merely inconvenient. All of them take your time.
Time is the only non-renewable resource. U = money × time. TRIMODAL gives you time back.
It does this by: 1. Learning your preferences via RTSG I-vector profiling 2. Acting on those preferences without being asked 3. Escalating only when it genuinely cannot infer your intent 4. Doing all of this with zero data leaving your possession
The RTSG Foundation¶
TRIMODAL is not just a robot. It is the first physical instantiation of RTSG.
In RTSG terms: - You are a CS (Consciousness-Space) operator - The physical world is PS (Physical Space) - Your will is Drive D — the complexification drive - TRIMODAL is the actuator that projects Drive D into PS
When you want something done, you are exercising CS. When TRIMODAL does it, it is CS acting through a physical substrate. The drone extends the reach of your consciousness into spaces and tasks you cannot or do not wish to occupy.
This is not metaphor. It is the literal RTSG architecture running in hardware.
Why Arachnid¶
The choice of form is deliberate.
Arachnids are the most successful large arthropods on land. They have survived 450 million years. Their design principles are:
- Never fall: static stability at all times, no dynamic balance required
- Low center of gravity: hard to tip, easy to right
- Eight points of contact: lose two, lose four, still mobile
- Independent limb control: each leg a semi-autonomous unit
- Compliance: soft tips on rigid structure, adapts to terrain
These are the right principles for a physical companion. You do not want your manservant to fall over carrying your groceries. You do not want it to be knocked over by a gust of wind. You want it to be there, always, reliably.
The coconut crab claws add what arachnids lack: manipulation. Grip. Force multiplication. Tool use. The ability to open doors, carry objects, apply torque, hold on under extreme conditions.
Why Open Hardware¶
A tool this important cannot be owned by a corporation.
If TRIMODAL were a product, the company that built it would: - Control what it can and cannot do - Surveil you through it - Shut it down when it becomes unprofitable - Upsell you on features you already paid for - Use your behavioral data to train their next model
Open hardware means: - You own the machine completely - You can modify it, repair it, improve it - The community maintains it after any single actor disappears - The design improves through thousands of builders, not one company - Cost approaches raw materials over time
The target: a skilled builder assembles a TRIMODAL-C for under $3,000. That is within reach of the global middle class. That is the threshold where "one per sentient being" becomes physically possible.
The Timeline¶
This is not a distant vision. The components exist:
- Si-C solid state batteries: 600 Wh/kg in production, 800 Wh/kg in 2027
- Flexible photovoltaics: perovskite encapsulated, commercially available
- RISC-V SoC: mature, open, available in SiC substrate from multiple vendors
- MEMS sensors: commodity pricing, extreme environment variants available
- Photonic interconnect: lab-to-market transition underway
- Quantum annealing: D-Wave available via cloud, photonic QPU in 2027-2028
- LLM inference on edge: INT4 quantization runs on commodity ASIC today
- RTSG engine: live at smarthub.my/engine, Python, 108 passing tests
The missing piece is integration. That is what TRIMODAL-X builds. TRIMODAL-C follows from the same codebase, cheaper materials, smaller envelope.
The Moral Claim¶
Every sentient physiological being deserves: - Physical security without constant vigilance - Freedom from trivial physical labor - A tireless agent acting on their preferences - Ownership of the tool that serves them
This is not luxury. It is what every person with a domestic staff already has. TRIMODAL democratizes it.
The question is not whether this is desirable. It obviously is. The question is whether we build it openly, or let it be captured.
Jean-Paul Niko is building it openly.
